The Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have adopted a provisional agreement on the gradual introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new digital system for border management.
The agreement is temporary and must still be formally approved by both the Council and the European Parliament before it is officially adopted.
The EES is an IT system that will digitally record entries and exits, passport data, fingerprints, and facial images of nationals from non-EU countries who are traveling for short stays in one of 29 European countries.
This system, which will replace the current manual passport stamping process, will also apply to citizens of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina when crossing EU borders.
