As fans of Tolkien's works eagerly await the new "Lord of the Rings" movie set to premiere in 2026, a small place in Goranci near Mostar has already welcomed its first guests in a hobbit-like cottage.
This charming location, called Mobbiton, pays homage to the beloved Hobbiton without infringing on copyright laws. Mobbiton is just one of several such cottages found in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mobbiton Near Mostar
Mobbiton, the newest addition, was created by computer engineers Vedran Miletić and his friends, who took on most of the construction themselves. The idea for this hobbit house came from their previous project, Barrel Land Blidinje, and was chosen by over 2,000 social media followers. Constructed over two and a half years, Mobbiton emphasizes retro, stone, and wood elements, fulfilling the desires of future guests.
The unique construction process, documented on Instagram, allowed followers to influence the design. Vedran explains that despite difficulties finding a willing construction firm, building it themselves allowed for flexibility and attention to detail, blending the beauty of Herzegovina's nature with Hobbiton’s charm.
Guests can enjoy the Goranci Park's many amenities, such as sports courts, a theatre, a restaurant, a petting zoo, and proximity to wild horse herds. Mobbiton also offers a pizza oven, Hobbiton craft beer, retro gramophone music, and more, promising a memorable stay.
Badger’s Den Near Han Pijesak
The first hobbit-like cottage in Bosnia and Herzegovina was built in 2021 at the Mountain Camp Badger’s Den, located about 10 kilometers from Han Pijesak. Since opening in May 2022, it has attracted guests from across the region and beyond. Despite the absence of prior visits to similar sites, the creators drew inspiration from the surrounding nature to design an authentic hobbit experience.
Guests can explore meadows, collect herbs, cook outdoors, and immerse themselves in the serene environment.
Underground House Village in Kreševo
Kreševo, located about 40 kilometers from Sarajevo, hosts the Underground House Village with five hobbit-like cottages. These began construction in February 2022 and started welcoming guests a year later. Marija Miličević Nuić, along with her family, created this village to offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Each cottage features a private garden, a hot tub, and opportunities for treasure hunts and traditional Bosnian experiences.
Visitors enjoy unique activities like making Bosnian coffee, lighting fires, and barbecuing, creating unforgettable memories. The village’s animal residents, including rabbits and chickens, add to the charm.
These magical cottages in Bosnia and Herzegovina offer Tolkien fans a closer and equally enchanting alternative to New Zealand’s Hobbiton, inviting them to immerse themselves in a world inspired by the beloved novels.
