Stefan and Dajana Balaban, a young married couple, are a shining example of how youth can return to rural life and embrace domestic production. Two years ago, they launched a small business in Kobatovci, near Laktaši, selling free-range eggs. Their goal was clear: to offer both themselves and others a healthier alternative when it comes to nutrition.
“My wife and I started our business two years ago. We sell eggs from free-range hens. We chose this type of production to provide people with healthier food options. When you compare our eggs to those found in supermarkets, which often come from caged hens, the difference in quality is obvious. That’s why we chose this path,” say Stefan and Dajana.
What began with just 50 hens quickly grew into something much bigger.
Today, they operate a full-fledged farm with more than 600 laying hens—and they’re not stopping there.
“We decided to take things seriously and registered our farm, which required a significant investment. To raise the necessary funds, we had to sell my wife’s car so we could buy more hens and adapt the facility to meet legal standards. Now, our farm has 600 laying hens, and we plan to reach 1,000 by the end of the year,” explains Stefan.
The road to building their farm was anything but easy. One of the biggest challenges was breaking into the market—but they persevered.
“In the beginning, it was really tough. There were moments we thought about giving up. But we pushed through, managed to break into the market, and over time, people began to recognize the quality of our work. Orders started coming in, and customers kept coming back,” adds Dajana.
The couple shares that the work requires full dedication and plenty of sacrifice. On top of running a growing farm, Stefan and Dajana recently became parents.
