The newly protected area encompasses the dramatic gorge and canyon valleys of the Drina River and the Brusnički Stream Canyon, as well as habitats of Pančić’s spruce and other endemic and relict plant species.

According to the Government of the Republic of Srpska, the area has been placed under protection in order to preserve its biological, landscape, hydrogeological and geomorphological features, while also creating opportunities for recreation, leisure and health tourism.

HOME TO RICH BIODIVERSITY

“Veliki Stolac” covers an impressive 16,886 hectares, making it one of the significant protected natural areas in this part of the Republic of Srpska.

Experts have recorded 69 bird species, 17 mammal species and around 2,000 butterfly species in the area. Among them is the striking Apollo butterfly, one of the best-known species inhabiting the region.

The area is also home to 18 species of amphibians and reptiles, while its plant life represents a particularly important natural value.

A total of 729 plant species have been recorded, including habitats of Pančić’s spruce and mountain maple, species of exceptional botanical significance.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR VIŠEGRAD TOURISM

The establishment of “Veliki Stolac” Nature Park is expected to have considerable economic and tourism significance for Višegrad.

The protected area provides an opportunity to develop nature-based tourism, outdoor recreation and health tourism while preserving the natural environment.

Its importance is also strengthened by the possibility of connecting “Veliki Stolac” with other protected natural areas in the surrounding region, creating a broader network of destinations for visitors interested in landscapes, biodiversity, hiking and outdoor experiences.

With its canyons, river valleys, rich wildlife and rare plant species, “Veliki Stolac” adds another important natural attraction to the tourism map of the Republic of Srpska.
