FROM NEW ZEALAND TO ŠIPOVO: WHY ANGLERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD COME TO THE PLIVA

Crystal-clear water, untouched nature and fish that are anything but easy to outsmart have made the Pliva River one of the most highly regarded destinations among fly-fishing enthusiasts. Anglers from different parts of the world travel to this river near Šipovo, and many of them keep coming back.

For fly fishermen, the Pliva is much more than just a river. Its exceptional clarity, abundance of natural food and challenging fishing conditions make every catch a real achievement, while encountering the famous Pliva grayling is an experience to remember.

TWO AND A HALF HOURS FOR A “PLIVA GOLDEN TREASURE”

Sometimes it takes hours of patience for just a few moments that make the entire trip to the Pliva worthwhile.

After two and a half hours of waiting, the fly finally fooled a grayling. The result was an impressive fish measuring around 50 centimeters – a true “Pliva golden treasure.”

“I managed, after two or two and a half hours of fishing, to fool a beautiful Pliva grayling. It is like a golden treasure, so golden and unique. To be honest, I have fished from New Zealand to Norway and on many different waters, but I am always happy to return to this beautiful Pliva River,” says angler Admir Gazić.

SOMETIMES THE ANGLER WINS, SOMETIMES THE FISH

Once the fish is finally in the angler’s hands, it does not stay there for long. It is handled carefully, photographed and returned to the river as quickly as possible.

That is part of the beauty of fly fishing. The goal is not to take the fish home, but to find it, outsmart it and enjoy the challenge.

“Sometimes we win, sometimes the fish wins. It depends. It is always about even – one to one,” explains angler Ognjen Tasić.

Although fishing is often associated with peace and relaxation, fly fishermen say that a day on the water can be surprisingly demanding.

“Sometimes it calms your nerves, but sometimes we get frustrated too. We do not move around that much, but at the end of the day we are as tired as if we had run a marathon,” Tasić adds.

WHY IS THE PLIVA SUCH A CHALLENGE FOR FLY FISHERMEN?

Fly fishing requires much more than good equipment. Experience, patience and a deep understanding of the river are essential – from its depth and currents to the places where fish gather and the way they feed.

This is precisely why the Pliva represents a special challenge even for experienced anglers who have fished rivers around the world.

“There are only two species of fish in the Pliva – trout and grayling. It is an exceptional challenge for foreign anglers because fishing here is very difficult. They can fish more easily on many other rivers, but the Pliva is special. Why? Because of its purity and clarity. There is plenty of food in the river and it is not polluted,” says Stanko Kljajić, an angler and resident of Šipovo.

FROM ITS SPRINGS IN ŠIPOVO TO THE WATERFALL IN JAJCE

To understand why the Pliva leaves such a powerful impression on anglers and nature lovers, it is worth starting where its story begins.

The Pliva rises in the Šipovo area, and its exceptionally clean and clear water is one of the greatest natural treasures of this part of the country.

From Šipovo, the river continues through Jezero towards Jajce, where it forms the Great and Small Pliva Lakes before spectacularly plunging over the famous waterfall and joining the Vrbas River.

It is precisely this combination of pristine water, rich aquatic life, untouched landscapes and challenging fly fishing that has turned the Pliva into a destination worth travelling thousands of kilometres to experience.

Because on the Pliva, the angler may not always win – but that is exactly what makes it so special.
