Every May, between the mountains Bjelašnica and Lebršnik, Gatačko Polje is graced with the fragrance of wild daffodils. These flowers, known locally as "Košute," captivate both locals and numerous tourists with their graceful appearance and intoxicating scent.
"Among the many natural treasures in the Gatačko
municipality, one landscape stands out at the end of May and the beginning of
June. This is our Gatačko Polje, covered in white flowers with a heady
fragrance. The local name is 'Košuta,' but its true name is the white daffodil,
or poet's daffodil," explains biologist Milica Krtolica.
The karstic Gatačko Polje, with an altitude of up to 960
meters and a favorable wind pattern, is ideal for the blooming of Košute.
Hardy, medicinal, and toxic, Košute have no natural predators.
"This is why they have survived so long in our Gatačko
Polje and spread so widely," adds Krtolica.
Košute are also recognized by the local tourism organization. In their honor, the Days of Košute are held annually.
"Every May, Košute fill Gatačko Polje with their scent,
attracting those who enjoy coming to gather and socialize. It has become a
tradition here. We recognized this, and the Days of Košute event celebrates
this flower, the wild daffodil, known here as Košuta," stated Jelica
Kovačević, Director of the Gacko Tourism Organization.
Many beliefs are associated with the Košuta flower.
Residents eagerly await each May, when their homes are filled with its scent. A
bouquet of Košute in your home is said to bring joy and happiness, and gifting
a single Košuta flower is believed to express love.
