COMMEMORATION OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF BRANKO ĆOPIC'S DEATH TO TAKE PLACE IN HIS HOMETOWN

The memory of the renowned writer Branko Ćopic will be honored on Tuesday in his hometown of Hašani, near Krupe na Uni, marking the 40th anniversary of his passing.

Blaženka Kenjalo, Director of the Public Institution "Bašta sljezove boje," informed Srna that participants will gather in Hašani at the memorial school dedicated to Ćopic. At 10 o'clock, wreaths will be laid at the writer's bust, followed by speeches from dignitaries and a literary session at the memorial house.

Branko Ćopic, born on January 1, 1915, in Hašani, tragically ended his life on March 26, 1984, by jumping off a bridge over the Sava River in Belgrade. He received his first literary award in 1938 from the Academy of Seven Arts for a short story, followed by the prestigious Rakić Award in 1939 and recognition from the Serbian Royal Academy in 1940.

His anthology of short stories, "Bašta sljezove boje," won the Njegoš Award in 1972, while he was awarded the NIN Award in 1958 for his novel "Don't Grieve, Bronze Sentinel." He was also a esteemed member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Branko Ćopic was beloved by both children and adults alike, known for his unique spirit and humor, making him a cherished guest wherever he went. His works were widely read, and his legacy continues to endure.

The commemoration serves as a testament to Ćopic's lasting impact on literature and culture, ensuring that his memory remains vibrant and cherished among generations.
