The traditional 34th event "Days of Haymaking on Balkana - Memorial Lazar Laketa," which gathered 19 participants from the region, began today at this picnic area near Mrkonjić Grad.
The Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska, Željka Stojičić, emphasized that this event preserves tradition and protects the culture and identity not only of this area but also of the Serbian people. She pointed out that this is also a sports event, and visitors will be able to see the skills of participants from the Republic of Srpska, the entire BiH, and other countries.
She noted that the event is held annually in honor of the former European champion in manual grass mowing, Lazar Laketa, from Mrkonjić Grad, who died in the Defense and Patriotic War in 1992.
The President of the Mrkonjić Grad Municipal Assembly, Stevica Eremija, declared the event open, after which a memorial service was held for Lazar Laketa, the founder of this competition. Among others, the Mayor of Mrkonjić Grad, Dragan Vođević, attended the memorial service and lit a candle at Laketa's grave.
