THE SECRET OF THE OLDEST GYMNASIUM IN SERBIA

In addition to the famous poet, Branko Radičević, who wrote some of the most beautiful verses about Sremski Karlovci, many other notable people also attended the famous gymnasium.

A hundred years after the founding of the Karlovci Gymnasium, in 1891, the building was erected, which is still one of the symbols of the town, located just over ten kilometers from Novi Sad. It was built as a legacy by German and Stevan Anđelić, the then patriarch and his brother.

Today, it is a school of exceptional national importance, where students can learn both classical and modern languages.

Visitors to Sremski Karlovci are also offered the opportunity, with prior notice to the local tourist organization, to take a close look at the interior of the Karlovci Gymnasium during organized tours.

Centuries-old settlement In the first written records, dating back to the 14th century, today’s Sremski Karlovci are mentioned not only as one of the most significant urban settlements but also as one of the largest at that time.

Although today it operates as an independent municipality, Karlovci used to be one of the municipalities of Novi Sad.
