Many purchase a rosary for religious reasons, but unfortunately, it has also become a fashion accessory. Over time, a rosary can break, leaving many wondering whether it should be discarded and what should be done with it.
On the Instagram profile of the Monastery of Saint George
the Great Martyr in Temska, it is written that a cross, rosary, and icon should
not be treated as talismans or mere decorations. The primary purpose of the
rosary is for monks to use it so they don't count prayers on their fingers
while reciting the prayer rule.
It is not wrong to wear a rosary even if we are not monks or do not practice such prayer, as it is a symbol of our faith.
It is emphasized
that we should understand that God does not mechanically act through objects
and should avoid personal responsibility and living in accordance with faith.
What to do with old and broken rosaries? Broken and old
rosaries should be burned and completely incinerated. This way, the sacred
object is not simply thrown away.
There is a belief that we must receive a rosary as a gift or
give it as a gift, but never buy it for ourselves. This is a superstitious
belief and has no basis in Orthodox Christianity, so you can buy one for yourself.
