NEVESINJE, Bosnia and Herzegovina – One of the oldest and most unique traditional sporting events in the Balkans is set to return this summer as the 151st Nevesinje Olympics takes place from August 1 to August 16, bringing together athletes, horse riders, performers and thousands of visitors from across the region.
More
than 50 sporting disciplines will be featured during the two-week festival,
with competitors battling for medals and cash prizes. Alongside the sporting
competitions, visitors can enjoy traditional music, folk dances, concerts,
cultural performances, agricultural fairs and authentic Herzegovinian cuisine,
making the event one of the largest cultural and tourism attractions in
Republika Srpska.
The
official opening ceremony will be held on August 1 with the raising of the
Olympic flag in Freedom Square, while the main ceremonial program is scheduled
for August 15, ahead of the spectacular finale at Bratački Lug on August 16.
Organizers
announced that this year's edition will place even greater emphasis on
entertainment and tourism, with a diverse concert program designed for
audiences of all ages in addition to the traditional sporting competitions.
A TRADITION OLDER THAN THE MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES
The
Nevesinje Olympics is widely regarded as the largest traditional gathering
celebrating heritage, chivalry and folk customs in Republika Srpska. Its
origins date back well before the modern Olympic Games, with the first official
edition held in 1875, while the oldest preserved event poster, kept in the
archives of the Nevesinje Church Municipality, dates from 1891.
The
event was established to preserve the customs, sports and traditions of
previous generations and continues to attract thousands of visitors from across
the former Yugoslavia and many other countries.
Horse
racing, unusual traditional competitions, displays of strength, amateur and
professional contests, and centuries-old customs create a festival unlike any
other in the region.
