Not far from Prijedor stands one of the valuable examples of traditional sacred architecture – the Log Church in Omarska, dedicated to the Ascension of Lord Jesus Christ.
For more than a century, this church has brought together worshippers while preserving its authentic appearance. Even today, it differs very little from the original structure built in 1922.
Log churches represent an important part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Republika Srpska, and the church in Omarska is considered one of the finest examples of preserved wooden sacred architecture.
Restoration and Preservation of the Original Appearance
Over the years, several restoration and improvement projects have been carried out on the church complex. In 1988, the old demolished bell tower was replaced with a new one designed by architect Savo Vrhovac.
A few years later, in 1991, the original narthex was expanded and successfully integrated into the dimensions of the new bell tower, preserving the harmonious appearance of this religious building.
Valuable Icons and Church Relics
The church's interior houses numerous relics and movable icons, which represent a special treasure. Most of them were created using the oil-on-canvas technique and are carefully framed.
Among the most significant artistic and spiritual treasures is the epitaphios, a work by a 19th-century artist that bears witness to the rich history of Orthodox art in this region.
Particularly noteworthy is the icon of the Three Holy Hierarchs, donated to the church by the Radović brothers in 1899, as well as the icon of Saint Sava, presented in 1935. These precious icons hold not only religious but also cultural and historical value.
New Iconostasis and Interior Renovation
Efforts to preserve this church have continued in recent decades. In 2013, a new iconostasis was installed, while a complete restoration of the church interior was carried out at the same time.
Thanks to these works, the Log Church in Omarska today represents a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship, spirituality, and cultural heritage, attracting both worshippers and admirers of history and authentic architecture.
A Place That Preserves Identity and Tradition
Despite its modest size, the Log Church in Omarska stands as a testament to the rich past of this area and remains an important part of the local community's identity.
Its well-preserved architecture, valuable icons, and more than a century of history make it one of the most interesting places to visit for anyone wishing to explore the spiritual and cultural heritage of Republika Srpska.
