DISCOVER A WILD PARADISE ON THE ROOFTOP OF KRAJINA

If you're looking for a place where nature speaks in silence, the water invites you to swim, and nights are counted by stars — then you may have already been to Šatorsko Lake. If not, now is the time.

Situated at 1,488 meters above sea level, on Mount Šator between Bosansko Grahovo and Livno, in the region widely known as "Krajina," lies one of the most breathtaking mountain lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Surrounded by rocky cliffs, pine trees, wildflowers, and the whisper of wind, Šatorsko Lake looks like a scene from a fairytale no one ever told — because despite its beauty, this natural wonder is still surprisingly unknown.

Here, nature is untouched. Wild. Powerful. And even more beautiful than the pictures suggest.

Mićo from Inđija knows that. A former soldier, now retired and a nature enthusiast, he has been camping here for several days with his wife Dragana, a former schoolteacher.

"I'm tired of cities and concrete. I'm happy here. We’ve traveled all over the Balkans, seen all the must-see places. But here... here, the soul breathes," Mićo says, watching over the lake’s bluish surface, currently a pleasant 22°C.

Mićo and Dragana have two sons — one of whom, he says, is married to a Nepali woman. Though Serbia and Bosnia share the same fate of mass youth emigration, they return to Bosnia regularly.

"We love Bosnia. The people, the nature, the feeling of freedom… Everything suits us here. My husband plans everything, finds the next destination, and I just go along. There’s no better vacation," says Dragana, smiling and relaxed as she chats with visitors from Bihać.

But Mićo and Dragana aren’t the only ones enchanted by this hidden gem. Along the shores of Šatorsko Lake, a group of Czech motorcyclists share their story.

“We saw some videos online. It looked unbelievable… So we hopped on our bikes and came. And we have no regrets,” says Pavel as he prepares to continue his journey.

Recently, Czech tourists have been arriving more often in this region. They aren’t loud, they don’t seek luxury — only nature. And Šator delivers, effortlessly.

Local Bosnian tourists are also rediscovering the lake.

To them, its beauty needs no words — Šator is simply known as one of the most stunning mountain landscapes in the country. The only complaint? The road. The access road is in poor condition. Logging trucks have damaged it further, making the ascent to the lake a real adventure — only for the brave.

But maybe that’s exactly why Šatorsko Lake remains wild, clean, and magical. If it were easier to reach, it might not be the same.

Still, with modest investment in road infrastructure and responsible tourism management, Šator could become a landmark destination for those seeking more than just an ordinary weekend trip. Because this isn’t a place you come to see — it’s a place you come to feel, reports usnkrajina.ba, and adds:
