TREBINJE PUBLIC LIBRARY EXPANDS BOOK COLLECTION AND HOSTS OVER 130 EVENTS IN A YEAR

Trebinje Public Library enriched its book collection last year with more than 2,000 new titles and organized over 130 cultural events, making these gatherings among the most visited in the city, said the library’s director, Milosava Supić Vuković, in a statement for SRNA.

Vuković emphasized that books are very much alive in Trebinje, with a particularly high readership among the elderly population.
She added that the library strives to bring books closer to elementary school students, frequently hosting organized visits from schools where students read and discuss books with librarians. For schools located further away, librarians personally visit and engage with students.
"Ensuring access to books for everyone is our priority, which is why our librarians deliver books to elderly citizens who are unable to visit the library due to health reasons," Vuković stated.
She highlighted that in line with their commitment to accessibility, the library has not changed its annual membership fees for over 20 years.
According to Vuković, the Trebinje Public Library provides an environment for learning and interaction, offering access to specialized literature, research materials, and books that support education. The library has successfully completed educational workshops for children.
"Our visitors can use computers, scanners, printers, and reading rooms," said Vuković, adding that aside from students, the library is a daily gathering place for elementary school children studying in groups, while the elderly enjoy reading newspapers with coffee or tea.
She also pointed out that, alongside the legacy collection of the famous poet Jovan Dučić, the library hosts an American Corner, where free workshops on physics, digital literacy, journalism, languages, and communication are organized for all age groups.
According to her, foreign language courses are in high demand, with English being the most popular. Thanks to the dedication of language professors, interest in learning English has been growing every year.
"We are especially pleased to see an increasing number of children participating in school program support sessions," Vuković said, adding that the library also houses a Chinese Cultural Center where visitors can learn Chinese and Italian, among other languages.
With numerous activities and programs, the library has also been working on the digitization of old and rare books, integrating them into the COBISS system. Additionally, it has been incorporating books from the collection of retired Bishop Atanasije and expanding its publishing efforts, as more authors from Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, and abroad choose Trebinje Public Library as their publisher.
"This year, just like before, we plan to organize high-quality literary evenings, book promotions, and art exhibitions. We are confident that we will continue to play a key role in the cultural and educational life of our community," Vuković concluded.
