UNSKA LAĐA: A PRIDE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF NOVI GRAD

The Unska lađa, a unique symbol of the Una River and the municipality of Novi Grad, represents not only an essential part of the historical heritage of this area but also a kind of brand that makes the identity of this municipality recognizable.

Although it is impossible to determine the exact period when these boats began to be used on the Una River, oral traditions suggest that they have been in use for over 200 years for various purposes.

There were two types of Unska lađa, with the design depending on the specific purpose of the vessel. Each boat carries a story of life and tradition, reflecting the methods of transportation, fishing, and trade that shaped the daily life of people in this area. The boats were essential for connecting communities, enabling communication and trade between settlements, as well as for various activities on the river.

Today, the Unska lađa is not only a landmark but has also become an increasingly recognized and attractive tourist symbol of Novi Grad, carrying with it the richness of cultural heritage and the natural beauty of the Una River.

This floating "brand" captivates visitors, reminding them of the long-standing connection between people and rivers.
