A new illustrated children’s book titled “The Duck from the Una”, written by Želimir Perić, has been created to introduce children to the nature, homeland, and cultural heritage of Novi Grad in a modern and age-appropriate way.
The
picture book was developed as part of the Kastrum Fest – Cultural Heritage
Festival, implemented by the “Kastrum na Uni” Association from Novi Grad. The
project aims to preserve, promote, and bring cultural heritage closer to the
youngest generations through creative and educational content.
This is the first picture book in Bosnia and Herzegovina whose primary goal is to familiarize children with cultural heritage through storytelling, illustration, and the symbolism of the Una River.
The main character — a duck — guides young readers
along the banks of the Una, using a simple yet meaningful narrative to
introduce them to community values, love for nature, and the importance of
preserving local identity.
Intended
for preschool and school-age children, the book also carries a strong message
for adults, reminding them of the importance of passing on knowledge about
cultural and natural heritage to younger generations.
Through
a warm and poetic story, “The Duck from the Una” encourages children’s
imagination and curiosity, fosters a sense of belonging and connection to the
place where they grow up, and represents a valuable contribution to preserving
the identity of Novi Grad and the Una River.
