ANDRIĆ AND VIŠEGRAD: FROM FIRST STEPS TO ETERNAL MEMORY

On March 13, at 12:00 PM, the "Petar Lubarda" Gallery of the Andrić Institute in Višegrad will host the grand opening of the exhibition "Andrić and Višegrad: From First Steps to Eternal Memory."

ANDRIĆ AND VIŠEGRAD: FROM FIRST STEPS TO ETERNAL MEMORY

The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the passing of Ivo Andrić, one of the most significant writers from the South Slavic region and a Nobel Prize laureate in literature.

Organized by the Andrić Institute, the exhibition is curated by Dr. Gordana Stančić, Slavko Garić, Gorica Ćećez, and Željka Ostojić. One of the key contributors to the realization of this exhibition is Divna Vasić, a retired professor of Serbian literature and a longtime researcher of Andrić’s life and works.

The archival materials used in the exhibition have been sourced from several esteemed institutions, including the Ivo Andrić Endowment, the Museum of the City of Belgrade, the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, contributions have been made by institutions based in Višegrad, such as the "Ivo Andrić" Cultural Center, the "Ivo Andrić" National Library, the "Ivo Andrić" Secondary School Center, the Višegrad Tourist Organization, and the Višegrad Municipal Archives.

The exhibition presents a chronological selection of photographs, documents, and correspondence that illustrate Ivo Andrić’s life journey—from his childhood in Višegrad and early school years to his initial literary steps and later years when he reached the pinnacle of his literary achievements as a Nobel laureate.

Special emphasis is placed on Andrić’s connection to Višegrad, a town that not only shaped his formative years but also became a central setting in his literary works. The exhibition will also feature Andrić’s works from the library collection of the Andrić Institute.

This documentary exhibition makes a significant contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, highlighting the deep connection between the writer and his historical and literary significance. By focusing on Višegrad as a crucial point in his creative legacy, the exhibition for the first time brings together a comprehensive collection of archival materials that illuminate Ivo Andrić’s relationship with the town. It provides a fresh perspective and opens new avenues for further research into his life and work.
