Banjaluka proudly continues its journey of preserving and enhancing its rich cultural heritage. Following last year’s successful illumination of the Kastel fortress walls, restoration works are now underway on two of its iconic towers – symbols that have safeguarded the spirit of the city for centuries.
According to Milada Šukalo, Project Manager for the City of Banjaluka, the restoration of Kastel, one of the city’s most recognizable cultural and tourist landmarks, carries great importance for both residents and visitors alike.
“Revitalizing the Kastel fortress remains high on the list of priorities for the city administration. After last year’s successful lighting project, this year we are continuing with the renovation of two towers, giving new life to this historical gem,” said Šukalo.
A special value of the project lies in the harmony between tradition and modern tourism. Tower 1 will soon house a modern Tourist Information Center, while Tower 2 will feature a souvenir shop and café – inviting spaces where history and Banjaluka’s signature hospitality will meet every day.
“Restoring Kastel’s towers is not only about preserving history, but also about investing in the city’s future – developing Banjaluka as a modern tourist destination. These towers are witnesses of time and cultural heritage that unite us, and their renewal opens doors to all who wish to experience the true spirit of our city,” added Šukalo.
The adaptation of Towers 1 and 2 is being implemented through the GIFTSnet Project, within the Interreg IPA HR-BA-ME 2021–27 program, with a clear goal – to make Kastel once again the beating heart of Banjaluka’s cultural and tourist life.
