Descending on ropes from the City Bridge, demonstrations of caving equipment, and conversations with experienced cave explorers attracted the attention of many residents of Banja Luka during Speleology Day, held as part of the "Summer on the Vrbas 2026" festival.
Although the live demonstrations have concluded, visitors can still explore an exhibition of speleological photographs and equipment at Tower 1 of the Kastel Fortress, showcasing both the beauty and the challenges of exploring caves and pits.
Breaking Fear and Bringing Speleology Closer to the Public
Members of the "Ponir" Speleological Society say that the goal of events like this is to introduce citizens to speleology and show that this discipline is not reserved only for experienced explorers.
"This is our way of showing people what a wonderful discipline speleology is. Visitors had the opportunity to become familiar with the equipment required for rope descent, and one of our main goals is to help people overcome fear. Fear can prevent someone from taking up this activity, but we have seen many examples of people gradually pushing the limits they set for themselves and, through regular participation in our activities, eventually overcoming that fear," Katarina Vujučić of the Ponir Speleological Society told SeeSrpska.
During the event at the City Bridge, speleologists demonstrated rope climbing and descending techniques and presented the equipment they use while exploring underground environments. The program continued at Kastel Fortress with a lecture on speleology, the natural treasures hidden beneath the surface, and the research expeditions carried out by cave explorers.
New Attractions Enriched "Summer on the Vrbas"
Minja Kovačević Šurlan, Director of the Banja Luka Tourist Organization, emphasized that events like this have multiple benefits.
"Besides being an attractive experience for our fellow citizens and visitors, the activities of speleologists are also an invitation for people to join this wonderful discipline, learn more about speleology, and, through its exciting presentation, help attract tourists," Kovačević Šurlan told SeeSrpska.
She added that this year's edition of "Summer on the Vrbas" has been enriched with numerous new and exciting activities that had not previously been part of the festival, with the aim of offering visitors a more diverse program while further promoting Banja Luka's natural beauty and tourism potential.
Kastel Exhibition Remains Open to Visitors
The exhibition of speleological photographs and equipment at Kastel Fortress remains open, offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover a world that most people never get to see and to learn more about a discipline that combines adventure, exploration, and nature conservation.
