MONASTERY DUGA NJIVA – WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SKY

On the green slopes of Mount Trebava, at 627 meters above sea level, lies the Duga Njiva Monastery – a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by forests, birdsong, and wide-open skies.

Dedicated to Saint Prophet Elijah, this is a place where prayer, tranquility, and the gentle power of nature come together.

Beneath the main church is the Crypt dedicated to Saint Prince Lazar and the Kosovo martyrs, a warm and intimate space where winter services are held. Icon painting is currently in progress there, so visitors often have a chance to see the monks at work and witness faith turning into art.

Today, monastic life is led by Archimandrite Teofil Đuričić, together with the brotherhood of the monastery. The young novice Dušan Radoja also resides here, while the monastery’s forest is cared for by priest Goran Panjkov, with the blessing of Metropolitan Fotije.

A story that lives on

The idea for this holy place was born at the traditional gathering “Zbor on Duga Njiva”, held on Ognjena Marija (St. Marina’s Day) since 1919. After the 1992 Corridor operation, the people of Trebava built the church of Lazarica here in honor of Saint Prince Lazar and all Serbian heroes.

That is why Duga Njiva is much more than a monastery complex – it is a place of remembrance, gratitude, and quiet pride, where history, nature, and spirituality meet in a unique way.

Why visit?

For peace.

For the views that travel across Trebava’s hills.

For the sound of church bells echoing through the forest.

For the feeling that time slows down, just a little.

Duga Njiva is an invitation to pause, breathe deeply, and feel Trebava the way locals do – with faith, hope, and a smile.
