Among the 20 food products protected through the Geographical Indications Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina are the famous Sarajevo ćevap, Herzegovinian extra virgin olive oil, and Nevesinje potatoes.
The Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanks to the USAID Sustainable Tourism Development Project in BiH, has significantly increased the number of products with geographical indications. At the beginning of 2024, there were only seven such products, reports Kliks.ba.
The portal highlights that this success was achieved with the support of entity agricultural ministries, local communities, and partners such as the EU, UNDP, and UN FAO. This growth reflects a strong collective commitment to preserving indigenous agricultural and food products while promoting the unique culinary heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Food Safety Agency of BiH emphasizes its active collaboration with the USAID Tourism project to better integrate protected products into the tourism sector and enhance the country’s tourism offerings.
An interactive map providing essential information about these products is now available on the Agency’s website. Earlier this year, a publication titled "Traditional Food Products of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Potential of Geographical Indications" was released, offering a detailed overview of products with the potential for geographical indication recognition.
Geographical indications (GIs) denote products originating from specific geographic areas, known for qualities or reputations tied to their origin. Strict production rules, defined by special regulations, ensure the high quality of these products and are monitored by independent bodies to guarantee consistency and authenticity.
After registration at the national level, producers can apply for protection within the European Union, further increasing their market visibility, the portal notes.
