DISCOVERED: THE BREAKFAST THAT PROMOTES LONGEVITY

We may not have much control over our lifespan, but certain lifestyle habits can help ensure a healthier life. Numerous studies have been conducted on this topic, and one has revealed the type of breakfast consumed by some of the world's oldest people.

A study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine states that oatmeal is the best breakfast for longevity.

A key part of the morning routine for 105-year-old Marge Jetton, who was also part of the study, was a breakfast consisting of lightly cooked oatmeal with nuts, dates, soy milk, and a glass of prune juice.

“Choose the type of oatmeal that suits you best and fits the time you have available,” advises dietitian Amanda Sauceda for Parade.

Flavored varieties are still beneficial as they contain essential nutrients, but plain oatmeal is likely the best choice.

“I’d stick to an average portion size, which is half a cup of oats,” adds Sauceda.

Benefits of Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a nutritious breakfast that supports heart and digestive health while providing long-lasting energy. Thanks to its fiber and vitamins, it is an excellent choice for a balanced diet.

Gut health and longevity are more connected than we might think.

“Your gut is linked to many parts of your body, and oatmeal is special because of beta-glucan,” explains Sauceda, adding: “Beta-glucan is a unique type of fiber that has a prebiotic effect and helps lower bad cholesterol, which is great for heart health.”

Another reason oatmeal is beneficial is its vitamin B content. Like many whole grains, oatmeal contains various B vitamins, which are important for energy levels and brain health.

Perfect Pairing with Other Healthy Foods

“Oatmeal is a perfect base for other healthy ingredients, like berries, yogurt, nuts, and seeds,” suggests Sauceda.

“You can even turn it into a savory dish by adding eggs and vegetables,” she adds for Parade.

Perhaps one of the best aspects of oatmeal is its affordability and accessibility. It’s cheaper than some other breakfast foods while being very nutritious.

Drawbacks of Oatmeal

Despite its many benefits, oatmeal isn’t for everyone.

“People with digestive issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel diseases, should limit their intake due to potential sensitivity to excessive fiber,” notes Sauceda.
