A mural featuring Avdaga’s Fata, a character from Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina, has been painted on a residential building in Višegrad. The artwork is part of a series of murals inspired by this literary masterpiece.
Andrej Žikić Artez, a street artist from Belgrade and the creator of the mural, shared that this project was a significant challenge for him.
“I would be delighted if I could leave this town with a series of works that help people learn more about Višegrad, its history, and enrich its cultural and tourist offerings,” Žikić emphasized.
One of the idea’s originators, Stefan Lakić, explained that the mural on Vojvode Stepe Street is designed as part of a series of portraits depicting characters from Andrić’s novel.
“With this initiative, we aim to refocus attention and awareness of our people on the fact that the foundations of culture and honor lie here in these lands, not somewhere beyond our borders,” Lakić noted.
Lakić also highlighted that Avdaga’s Fata, a character from Andrić’s novel, symbolizes a strong personal stance.
“On the day of her wedding, which was arranged against her will, Fata chose to jump from the bridge and end her life. In doing so, she demonstrates that she is not merely a passive object or a pawn to be moved but enters history as a self-aware individual who defies authority,” Lakić stated.
The mural project was initiated by the “Eco Center” Association, with the support of the "Drina Hydropower Plant" company and the municipality of Višegrad.
